    Emergent statistical-mechanical structure in the dynamics along the period-doubling route to chaos

    We consider both the dynamics within and towards the supercycle attractors along the period-doubling route to chaos to analyze the development of a statistical-mechanical structure. In this structure the partition function consists of the sum of the attractor position distances known as supercycle diameters and the associated thermodynamic potential measures the rate of approach of trajectories to the attractor. The configurational weights for finite 2N2^{N}, and infinite N→∞N \rightarrow \infty , periods can be expressed as power laws or deformed exponentials. For finite period the structure is undeveloped in the sense that there is no true configurational degeneracy, but in the limit N→∞N\rightarrow \infty this is realized together with the analog property of a Legendre transform linking entropies of two ensembles.     Teacher education pedagogies and methodological constructs: or about different ways to approach teacher education

    This paper plots the methodological constructs identified in different teacher education pedagogies deployed in teacher education settings of Higher Education Institutes in the province of Catamarca. The focus is on showcasing how future teachers are aided -from the methodological constructs of mentors- to make pedagogical decisions and broaden their potential for action during the educational path. The research was conducted from a qualitative approach. Three Higher Education Institutes representing different socio-cultural contexts and educational traditions were selected on the assumption that distinct pedagogies would be found; not only structured on the basis of stereotypical training, but also on the specificity of the disciplinary field. Seventeen semi-structured interviews were carried out and were accompanied by classroom observation of teacher educators in different areas, from distinct disciplinary backgrounds and varied seniority. The qualitative analysis of the data enabled the reconstruction of three typologies that explain the modes in which teacher education is pedagogically configured in the institutes under study as well as the dominant methodological construct that sets up each pedagogical approach. Thus, the pedagogy of ‘modeling’ teaching is based on methodological constructs based on the transmission of disciplinary contents and the instilment of behavior patterns; the ‘traditional’ view is built on methodological constructs elaborated on the basis of disciplinary logic; and the ‘eclectic’ approach is materialized in methodological constructs based on the synthesis of heterogeneous components or constructions grounded on pedagogical abstention.Fil: Diaz, Ana Griselda.     Scaling of distributions of sums of positions for chaotic dynamics at band-splitting points

    The stationary distributions of sums of positions of trajectories generated by the logistic map have been found to follow a basic renormalization group (RG) structure: a nontrivial fixed-point multi-scale distribution at the period-doubling onset of chaos and a Gaussian trivial fixed-point distribution for all chaotic attractors. Here we describe in detail the crossover distributions that can be generated at chaotic band-splitting points that mediate between the aforementioned fixed-point distributions. Self affinity in the chaotic region imprints scaling features to the crossover distributions along the sequence of band splitting points. The trajectories that give rise to these distributions are governed first by the sequential formation of phase-space gaps when, initially uniformly-distributed, sets of trajectories evolve towards the chaotic band attractors. Subsequently, the summation of positions of trajectories already within the chaotic bands closes those gaps. The possible shapes of the resultant distributions depend crucially on the disposal of sets of early positions in the sums and the stoppage of the number of terms retained in them

    Bubble size distribution measurement, modeling and control in a laboratory flotation column

    Ce travail de recherche vise à mesurer et à contrôler la distribution du diamètre des bulles (DDB) dans une colonne de flottation. L'objectif se décompose en trois parties. La première phase vise à estimer correctement la taille des bulles grâce à des algorithmes de traitement d'images prises par une caméra. La DDB obtenue est ensuite modélisée par une distribution log-normale qui est définie par deux paramètres, la moyenne et l'écart type. Deuxièmement, grâce au nouveau système de mesure et à la représentation log-normale, un modèle dynamique à gains non linéaires (structure de Wiener) dont les sorties sont la moyenne et l'écart-type de la DDB est estimé. Une bonne concordance entre la réponse du système expérimental et celle du modèle identié est observée. Finalement, une stratégie de commande prédictive contrainte basée sur le modèle de Wiener est conçue afin de réguler la BSD. Les résultats de laboratoire obtenus sont très satisfaisants

    Relating high dimensional stochastic complex systems to low-dimensional intermittency

    We evaluate the implication and outlook of an unanticipated simplification in the macroscopic behavior of two high-dimensional sto-chastic models: the Replicator Model with Mutations and the Tangled Nature Model (TaNa) of evolutionary ecology. This simplification consists of the apparent display of low-dimensional dynamics in the non-stationary intermittent time evolution of the model on a coarse-grained scale. Evolution on this time scale spans generations of individuals, rather than single reproduction, death or mutation events. While a local one-dimensional map close to a tangent bifurcation can be derived from a mean-field version of the TaNa model, a nonlinear dynamical model consisting of successive tangent bifurcations generates time evolution patterns resembling those of the full TaNa model. To advance the interpretation of this finding, here we consider parallel results on a game-theoretic version of the TaNa model that in discrete time yields a coupled map lattice. This in turn is represented, a la Langevin, by a one-dimensional nonlinear map. Among various kinds of behaviours we obtain intermittent evolution associated with tangent bifurcations.     Means to an End: A Qualitative Interview Study on Medical Students and Debt

    Today, 43.4 million Americans owe 1.7 trillion dollars in student loan debt (Hanson, 2022). The American Association of Medical Colleges (2021) reported that 73% of medical students graduate with educational debt, of which the average medical student borrowed $203,062 in student loans. The problem addressed through this study is that as the narrative about student loan debt grows, the hegemonic understanding of debt revolves around the undergraduate student\u27s experience and their eminent struggles regarding repayment of student loans and employment. However, limited research exists on how medical students understand and experience debt. Several researchers have discussed the lack of understanding about medical students and debt. For instance, Kahn et al. (2006) suggested that medical students make major life choices based on several complex factors, but further research is needed. Rohlfing et al. (2014) discussed the necessity of a study specifically looking at the impact of the cost of attendance on medical student debt and major life choices. Young et al. (2016) echoed for further research on understanding the complex ways and multiple dimensions in which in medical students and residents understand debt. This qualitative study aimed to expand on how medical students experience and make meaning of debt. Two semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 medical students during their final year of medical school. The following question guided this study: How do graduating medical students at Florida International University experience and understand debt? Three super-ordinate themes and 10 sub-themes were developed from participants’ interview transcripts utilizing an interpretative phenomenological analysis. The super-ordinate themes are: a) Debt (Re)Articulated, b) Emotions and Approaches to Debt, and c) The Temporality of Debt. The study’s key findings revealed that participants’ articulations vary from the commonsensical understandings of debt as financial to non-financial obligations to family, institution, and God. Participants felt burdened and frustrated by the cost of obtaining a medical degree while also accepting their student loan debt as an investment that can be managed and paid off in the future. Participants expressed the influence of their student loan debt in their daily decisions and the expected influence it will have in delaying major life decisions and the foreclosing of opportunities in the future. The implications of this study call for reform in federal loan and medical education policies and action by medical colleges to reduce the debt burden placed on medical students
